I had plans this weekend.  Then I didn’t.  Or rather, then Ellie’s plans were my plans.  She thought it would be cool to go camping at the Great Sand Dunes in the Sangre de Cristos.  After explaining to Ellie that the 4th of July is perhaps the busiest camping weekend ever, we booked a motel in Alamosa, because sure enough, all the camping spots were full.

IMG_2879

The San Luis Valley is notable for how flat it is, and just plain barren, but there are things to do.  Of all the random things, there is an alligator farm just west of the Sand Dunes.  Ellie’s friend Kathryn came with us.

Dad

Since we got to Alamosa in the afternoon, we headed to the Sand Dunes at night to watch the stars.  It’s a unique national park.  To get to the Sand Dunes, you first have to wade across an ankle-deep creek.  The water is warm during the day but freezing cold at night.

Processed with VSCO with c8 preset

The creek is a bit deeper earlier in the season, carrying snow-melt down from Crestone Peak.  These are the head waters of the Rio Grande.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

The Dunes are a special spot to watch the sun set, and to star gaze after 10 pm.  We could also see fireworks 30 miles away in Alamosa.

The girls were ready to sandboard the next day.  The sand was too hot to walk barefoot before noon.  I suggest getting there as early as possible in the summer months.

air

Ellie got the hang of it quick.  She caught some air in this photo.  And she collected 72 mosquito bites.  Best to visit the Great Sand Dunes in April and May to avoid the mosquitos.

Crested Butte

IMG_5596

This is our Austrian exchange student Caroline’s first trip to Crested Butte and the Slate River Valley, so naturally we stopped for a quick pic when we crossed the Continental Divide.  Monarch Pass sits 200 miles from our house, assuming you duck into BV for a bite at the Eddyline Brewery.  Ninety minutes later, we checked into the Elevation Hotel & Spa.  Don’t ask me to explain the holes in these girls’ pants.  I blame the influence of Emma Gonzales.

Ed

Karen and I hiked Friday morning from the Slate River Trailhead.  The snow was packed hard enough that we left our snowshoes in the van.  Not a great snow season for Colorado, but there’s enough.  We trekked along another trail above town after lunch.  We’re learning our way around Slate Valley.  If you’re not familiar with Crested Butte, it sits in a gorgeous valley, north of Gunnison and south of Aspen.

Processed with VSCO with g2 preset

The girls got in a full day of snow boarding.  So warm they didn’t need their ski jackets.  Tomorrow should be even warmer.  Nice views from the mountain with the clear skies and full sun.  BTW, Camp 4 Coffee is the best in CB.

coffee shop

We’ve yet to eat out at places we’ve been before.  As good as we know they are, we’re still exploring this town.  We ate at the Last Steep tonight.   Looks like a cheap sandwich shop but will surprise you.  We do plan on pizza at Secret Stash tomorrow though.  Too good to ignore that one.

Chair Lift Fail

Crested Butte, Irwin Brewing, Secret Stash, spring break

Ever fall off a chairlift?  Me either.  Until today.  I’ve been skiing for 35 years and today was my first chair lift fail.  The Painter Boy lift is extremely close to the ground and my board caught its edge before leaving the base.  I flipped over the front of the lift and grabbed the chair to keep it from cleaving off my chin.  I held on long enough for some clearance before dropping and rolling out of the way.  Ellie didn’t miss a beat though.  “I’ll wait for you at the top Dad!”

Still, I had one of my best snow boarding days ever.  The morning started off snowy with powder too deep for Ellie and me to easily navigate, but the sun came out soon enough and the conditions turned out to be spectacular by noon.

We ended up eating pizza for dinner at Secret Stash on Elk Street.  Hard to describe such an eclectic place, our booth was set against this wall of books, but I can tell you the food was awesome.  And they served an IPA by Irwin Brewing Company.  I’d tell you the name of the beer is 11, but the waiter wasn’t clear on that, it wasn’t on the menu, and Irwin Brewing is having issues with their online presence.  I can however quote the waiter with confidence in saying this is the best and only good locally crafted IPA in Crested Butte.  Look for it.

Trail Closed

Crested Butte, Cross Country Ski, nordic ski

Ellie and I cross country skied today through Slate Valley.  Quite possibly, all of Slate Valley.  Trail maps suck.  With less than two miles to go, so close we could see the end, we were faced with a trail closed sign.  Turning around meant maybe another two miles.  We didn’t turn around, we skied right past that sign.  A couple of hundred meters later, we were faced with a washed out bridge.  I thought we could have jumped it, Ellie is more cautious than me.  Failure to make the jump cleanly might have led to hypothermia.  We ended up skiing a good eight miles, but enjoyed every minute of it.  I love nordic skiing.  It’s like trail running but so smooth and graceful.

photo removed

The Crested Butte Nordic Center is off 2nd Street in downtown, so afterward, Ellie I and strolled around Elk Street taking photos.  We met up with the gang later at Lil’s Sushi for dinner.  Incredibly good but the really special thing is their fantastic happy hour.  People queue up outside waiting for them to open.

sunny in Crested Butte

This town has great dining.  The night before was super good Italian at Marchitelli’s.  And the night before that at Coal Creek Grill, where the lovelorn working girl Liz threw herself to her death in the icy street below the hotel back during the gold rush.  Hard to pick a favorite, it’s all good.

spring break

Brittany was only five years old the last time we visited Crested Butte.  She’s not here with us twenty years later.  Someone had to stay home to watch the dogs.  So I got to board with Ellie instead.  Her first time to Crested Butte.  She’s become a much better snow boarder than me.  She was carving the snow up today while I was lucky to get on my toes by the end of the day.

We used to come up to Crested Butte with Karen’s family in the early years of having moved to Colorado.  It’s a pretty cool town.  The downtown is as cute as any mountain town in Colorado.  There’s no highway cutting through town like Breckenridge or so many other towns.  We’re up here this spring break with good friends.  I survived my first day of snow boarding and hope to report improvement before returning home.

GLCR 686, spring break, Vail, Winter Park

whiteout

Ellie’s spring break was a big week of snowboarding.  She starts the week out in Winter Park with Chase and Wendy.  She finishes the week in Vail with her sister.  The first day is a whiteout snowfall.  Ellie said the powder was so deep, it didn’t hurt to fall.

Ellie n Chase 2

Chase skis but Ellie is able to keep up with him on her board.  Ellie took off day two to recover her legs and do some shopping.  The three of them watch movies every night and eat huge breakfasts that Wendy cooks each morning.  Ellie’s favorite is Custard French Toast with Pecan Crust.

Chase n Wendy

I wonder if Wendy cooks like this when it’s just Chase at home?  I’m considering buying a 2016-2017 season ski pass to Winter Park for Ellie, just so she can have a hot breakfast.

Ellie n Chase

Thursday is full sunshine.  I drive up to join them, my skin smothered in zinc, but get sunburned anyway.  This is my first time to snowboard in Winter Park.  Gorgeous mountain.  Maybe age has diminished my sense of balance, but the lifts at Winter Park eject me like catapults.  I fall getting off over half the time.

Ed n Wendy

I’m serious about Winter Park ski passes.  Boarding with Wendy and Chase was a blast and it’s a great mountain.  Coming back for sure.

Ed n Brit 3

Ellie and I hook up later with Karen and Brit in Vail.  Turns out, this is Brit’s first time snowboarding in four years.  She’s still faster than me.

Ed Vail

I show off my toe side here.  And I master hopping off the lifts – not pictured.

Brit Vail 1

Brittany boards with some style.  Brit got me to try snowboarding about 10 years ago.  I finally bought a $40 board off Craigslist last year to hit the slopes with Ellie.  Glad I did.

Brit Vail 3

Is Brit sticking her tongue out at me?  Millennials!  She’s riding Ellie’s board here and struggles a bit because she doesn’t like the parallel position of the bindings.  She falls getting off the lifts more than I did at Winter Park.

Brit Vail 2

The difference between boarding with Ellie and Brit is that Brit drinks beer with me in between runs. I believe we both improved our form after each can of liquid courage.

Ed n Brit

Snowboarding with Brit on Friday, after a four or five year gap, brought back great memories. So good to know we can still shred the slopes. I expect many more years of this.

condo

Brit and Ellie gear up Saturday morning to snowboard before the forecast rain begins.  Another day too warm to snow.  They get in some runs though.  Brit feels better on her own board with the bindings turned out.

slope

Hail begins to fall on the mountain shortly after noon so the girls quit early to do some shopping.  Ellie finds a new, black GLCR 686 ski jacket, an early birthday present to herself.  Brit assumes this means she inherits Ellie’s green GLCR 686 jacket.  That’s how sisters think.

Ed n Ellie WP

They catch the bus home just as it begins to rain.  Vacation is winding down as Ellie entertains us with her ukulele.  Another good spring break.

Eldora

pow-powThis weekend isn’t over yet.  I snowboarded today up at Eldora with Ellie and Julia.  We endured heavy falling snow for most of the day.  Sticky powder.  I might have to wax my board.  Julia’s ski came off here going through the tunnel.  She borrowed her mom’s skis and might need her own.  Hint, hint.

Ellie 2

Ellie has improved tremendously since we last went boarding.  Her recent lesson is paying dividends as she can masterfully switch now from heel to toe.

Ellie

Both Ellie and I invested in some better goggles.  These fit while wearing glasses, which we both wear.  They include a neck scarf that easily attaches via magnet.  Perfect face protection for the windy slopes of Eldora.

Eldora, Eldora Snowboard Lessons, Nederland

IMG_7591

Normally my weekends present me with a running event to write about.  Or a hike or some workout even more massive than a marathon.  We can’t always have what we want.  I’m still injured.  Ellie then provides me with some sport to relate.  That’s my girl.  Today it’s snowboarding up at Eldora.  I know, this is what we did last weekend too.  Sliding down a snow covered mountainside on a board is something I would do every weekend if only I could.

After a few runs together, Ellie met up with Juliana for a private lesson.  We set our plan at the end of last year to begin this season with some training.  Hooking up with Juliana was just random but she was Ellie’s group instructor last year.  Ellie was able to study boarding on her toe edge.  And the proper technique to shift from her back edge to front edge by shifting her weight on her feet independently rather than keeping both feet in synch.  I need to work on this myself.  I boarded solo during her lesson and took my share of spills.

Eldora, GNU snowboards, Nederland

Ellie and Ed at EldoraEllie and I got up to Eldora today for the first time this year.  Normally Eldora wins the prize as the windiest ski hill in Colorado but today was nice.  Full sun and maybe 20° with very little wind.  Ellie got to try out her new GNU B-NICE board and matching bindings.  I got to relearn how to snowboard.  I don’t have much muscle memory at this sport, but we both found our snowboard legs fairly quickly.

Ellie at Eldora 3

Ellie found her snowboard legs much quicker and I wouldn’t see her until the bottom of the hill.  A couple of her girlfriends were up here, Grace and Ivy, but we didn’t hook up with them until we were leaving.  They were alpine skiing.  We’re committed to boarding.

Ellie at Eldora 1

We intend to get up here as many weekends as possible.  Anyone else wants to go, skiing or snowboarding, let me know.  I’ll haul your kids up.  I’m looking into lessons for next weekend.  Seems like a good idea to accelerate the learning curve early in the season.  Today was a warmup.  This is the season Ellie and I truly learn how to snowboard with confidence.

Jazzercise, snowboard, spring break

top of Dercum Mountain

Spring Break’s not over until the snow melts.  And that day is near.  Keystone closes their slopes tomorrow.  The Nordic Center closed at the end of March.  We drove up Thursday afternoon in zero traffic. I first learned how to ski here my senior year of college, 32 years ago. No lessons. I rode to the top of the mountain with my brother Steve. He told me I’d learn on the way down. Same brother who taught me how to play baseball right handed. I’m left handed.

JengaWe could not have asked for nicer weather. Ellie and I started with a large game of Jenga, waiting for the lifts to open.  Then we took the River Run gondola up with plans to snowboard nothing but greens back down. This was our routine all day. We boarded down the aptly named Schoolmarm trail.  We stored our jackets in a locker after our first run, it was that warm. Saw one guy skiing in shorts on Friday and many more on Saturday.

Schoolmarm is 3.5 miles long. We got in three runs for 10.5 miles. I swear to you, running 10 miles is easier. I’m certain if we weren’t such novices, we could have boarded much more. We both improved dramatically by the second run, but boarding with the breaks on is one helluva workout. My legs were too fatigued for a 4th run. By the end, I could barely manage to stand back up after falling. And I fell often. I fell into the yellow plastic snow fence at one point. Saved me from dropping off a small cliff.

IMG_5878I was a little surprised Ellie is better than me at boarding.  She has better form.  I think I began to shift from heel to toe quicker than her, but she could go so much farther before resting than me.  I tried to catch her at rest stops but my thighs would be on fire to the point I was nearly in tears.  Snowboarding probably isn’t so tough once you learn good form, but I’m still fairly novice at it.  I intended to snowshoe later with Karen but was way too fatigued to even think about it.  She had to work most of Friday, and then she also needed to practice new Jazzercise routines for a third class she picked up recently.

Ellie and I lunched Friday on top of Dercom Mountain before our last run.  She said the pizza was the best she’s ever eaten.  I tried to explain to her the phenomenon of how good food tastes when your body is extremely starved of calories.  She didn’t go for it though.  Apparently the food is pretty good on that mountaintop.

the fallWhile Ellie is clearly ahead of me in snowboarding skills, she took her share of spills.  I captured one in this pic.  Ellie fell so hard and often whenever she attempted to board on her toe edge, her knees are swollen with bruises.  We gladly soaked in the hot tub upon our return to the lodge for a good hour.  I took in the steam room as well.  The Keystone Lodge and Spa is a nice family-oriented property.  Not everything was available, some restaurants were closed, being the end of the season.  This was true for the slopes too but it’s arguably worth it given the smaller crowds and light traffic.  There was certainly enough snow for Ellie and me.

SaturdayWe expected dramatic improvement in our form Saturday but discovered snowboarding is even harder when your legs have been left shredded from the day before.  We strategically first boarded down a short slope to warm up but it didn’t help.  It took us twice as long to board down the 3.5 mile Schoolmarm trail the second day.  Our legs were too weak to work on our toe edge much.  The requisite confidence just isn’t there when your legs are like jello.  We still had a good second day.  Shorter, but just as exhausting as our first day.  An older skier ran into me near the bottom, in a slow zone.  He couldn’t find it in himself to apologize, instead he focused on trying to blame a slow moving skier downhill from me.  That girl at least asked me immediately if I was okay.  I was but highly irritated at this guy’s poor behavior, and I let him know it.  Because I was paying attention, I saw him coming and positioned myself for the collision.  Otherwise it might be a different story.

EllieEllie and I made our plans for next year.  We intend to kick off the season in November or December with a private lesson.  Ellie also wants her own snowboard for her birthday – which is in a couple of weeks.  She used Brit’s board this year.  I think I’m good on gear but like the idea of starting out with a private lesson.  I know proper form will pay dividends in terms of further enjoyment of the sport.  Even if I always suck, it’s so incredibly fun to join my daughter in such a thrilling activity.  I absolutely love Colorado.  Life is good.

Snowboarding with Ellie

Breckenridge, Eldora, Keystone, Nederland

“Keep your back straight!”  Ellie coached me today on how to snowboard.  That’s fair, I taught her how to ride a bike.  I thought I knew how to snowboard but six years have somehow passed by since I last went.  Could have something to do with breaking my ribs on that last outing in Idaho.  Falling on a snowboard comes fast and hard.  Ellie knows, check out that photo of her below.

face plantWhat really helped me today was renting some snowboard boots.  I started out in my snow boots, trying to save some money.  That was a mistake.  I felt totally uncoordinated on my first couple of runs.   It only took a few minutes to rent some boots and I improved dramatically.  My two key lessons for today were proper boots and keeping my back straight.

back edgeTo go out with Ellie, I first had to acquire a snowboard.  I bought a ten year old K2 off Craigslist on Monday for $30.  The guy wanted $40 but then we both noticed a screw missing from the bindings.  For my speed, the one screw isn’t critical.  I might buy some newer bindings though off Craigslist this week.  I don’t need new gear at my novice level of experience.  I just need to keep up with Ellie.  We started out on the magic carpet and worked our way onto the lift after a few initial runs.
Today’s weather was unbelievably warm and sunny.  Neither of us wore gloves.  We’re going to try to get up another weekend or two before spring break to work on our skills.  Then, we plan to join the Sebesta’s at the start of spring break at the Stockert’s cabin in Breck.  And we plan on boarding another couple of days at the end of break in Keystone.  I’m confident Ellie and I will be real snowboarders by the end of the season.  We lunched at the end of today at the Black Forest in Nederland.  Awesome day!

Ellie’s Last Lesson

Austin Marathon, Eldora, Eldora Nordic Center, Kid's Trek

downhillToday marks our sixth consecutive drive up to Eldora Mountain Resort for Ellie’s snow board lessons in the Eldora Kid’s Trek Program.  Certainly not our final drive up but Ellie’s last lesson for this course.  She has a coupon for a discounted private lesson that I intend to schedule after my return from Austin in March.  And the first full week of April is spring break.  I told her I would snow board with her then.  It’s been six years for me.  Last time snow boarding, I broke my ribs. Maybe I need lessons.

marileeI snowshoed with Marilee.  We hiked the Lonestar Loop counterclockwise, until we lost the trail.  We wound up returning on the Rising Sun Nordic Ski Trail.  Fortunately we weren’t seen by any Nordic skiers.  Despite the snow this past week, we trekked across a couple of bare spots.  But then, it’s also been 70° the last few days.  Mixed blessings.

the girlsMarilee and I lunched with her friend Nancy at the Sundance Cafe.  Great menu with awesome views, located about a mile outside of Nederland toward Black Hawk.  I ate a bison burger with Brie and jalapenos.  They have a lodge too.  This photo captures Emma leading Ellie down the hill.

I dropped the distance of my Saturday run down to ten miles.  Saw Amy riding her bike on the LoBo Trail.  I probably won’t exceed six miles on any single run this week.  I’m in super taper mode.  My focus is now on nutrition and not hurting myself before next Sunday’s Austin Marathon.  I think my pace will be posted to Facebook at key intervals.  Hoping to have a good run.  Seven more days.

Winter Taper

Austin Marathon, beer cheese, Eldora, snowshoe

meekoI began my taper for the Austin Marathon this weekend.  Twelve mile run Saturday, down from twenty.  And a bit shorter snowshoe today.  My winter-style taper means only running about four days a week, and snowshoeing.  If I think about it, I probably have only been averaging four days of running per week all throughout January.  This year launched the start of the next ice age and conditions have been treacherous.  Saturday’s run was at a comfortable pace.  My legs were heavy from a hard run Friday, so it was mostly a recovery pace.  I loosened up on the return and squeezed in two tempo runs.  Weather was ideal.  Planning on a similar run next Saturday.

emma

The girls had a great day snow boarding.  We drove out of Boulder Valley across icy roads and under heavy snow clouds.  Canyon Drive up to Nederland was crawling at 35 mph.  But Eldora Mountain Resort was somehow above the clouds.  Full day of sunshine and minimum wind.  Ellie and Emma are becoming comfortable on their boards.  Pretty sure I know what we’ll be doing over spring break.  This first picture is of Emma, the second is of Ellie.  I didn’t get any shots close up.  I got yelled at for being on the hill without skis.  No pics of me today so I’m giving you a photo of one of our new puppies.

ellieI tapered a bit on my snowshoe today as well, keeping it under two hours.  I took the middle loop for the first time – Snowshoe Hare Trail.  This was too short so I worked in some other smaller trails as well.  The Snowshoe Hare Trail is the newest for the Nordic Center, and I would say the prettiest in terms of trees.  All the trails are hilly.

We made it home in time to watch the Super Bowl.  I made a beer cheese recipe I read in Saturday’s paper.  There were three other queso dishes at the party, so I probably shouldn’t be upset that my dish was only half eaten, but I didn’t care for it.  The texture is odd.  Susan suggested melting the cheese and I agree.  The story in the paper said that serving the dish warm is sort of a new spin on the recipe, otherwise it is historically served cold.  I also improvised with a seasonal ale I had from Austin called, Yule Shoot Your Eye Out.  Maybe not the best pairing with Cheddar.

Austin Marathon, Eldora, snow board, snowshoe

Karen & MarileeThe parking lot at Eldora Mountain Resort was packed early today.  No football on TV.  And an acceptable wind.  Karen and Marilee joined me this morning to snowshoe.  We started counter-clockwise on the Lonestar Loop, like I have on previous outings, but turned onto the Twisted Snowshoe Trail for the shorter inside loop. The Snowshoe Hare Trail is the middle loop and Lonestar is the longest, outside loop.

Marilee took to snowshoeing like a pro.  The snow isn’t difficult on these trails, no super deep powder.  But the slope is fairly steep, much more so than any of the trails Karen and I did last year.  We did well though despite the hills with a 1.5 mph pace for 1.5 miles – which made a one hour hike.

steep slopeThe girls enjoyed less wind for their snow boarding lessons.  Shortly after lunch though, Ellie went down hard on her left shoulder.  We collected her in the medical tent after the staff had recorded every ache Ellie experienced over the last several weeks.  They likely learned from this to ask my daughter less open-ended questions.  Who knew such extensive healthcare comes with the price of a lift ticket?  Ellie is still a bit sore but nothing serious.

Saturday’s twenty mile run didn’t go as well as last weekend.  I was hoping to show improvement, that would help my confidence going into the Austin Marathon.  Doesn’t matter, the important thing was I was able to complete the distance.  Speed isn’t critical.  I figure my legs were heavy from my workout the day before.

There’s still a bit of ice on the LoBo Trail south of Hwy 52.  There was enough clean dirt to safely navigate around the ice.  In my seventh mile, just before the ice patches, I saw Jen running back toward Longmont.  We gave each other a low five because we’re cool runners.  On my return, I began to run over the ice simply to make the trail less pedestrian.

Emma & EllieMy pace was slower than last weekend during the first half but I really slowed down at 17 miles.  Kind of like how a bad marathon goes.  Actually, I slowed down considerably at 17 miles last week too.  But everything was under a 9 minute pace then.  I ran a half minute per mile slower this Saturday.  Still, running the distance is all I need to feel prepared for Austin.  Three more weeks, I’ll be ready.

Wind Down

Austin Marathon, Eldora, snowboard, winddown

Ellie downhillNo snowshoe today.  Eldora Mountain called a “wind down”.  This is their term for shutting down the mountain due to strong winds.  They reported gusts from 35 to 80 mph!  A real bummer, it wasn’t cold at all.  The girls got in about an hour though boarding on a small hill waiting for the call.  They boarded a bit after as well since they could walk up the hill.  So not a complete bust.  Although I didn’t get a chance to snowshoe, I got some good pics of the girls.

EmmaPerhaps just as well I didn’t snowshoe.  I ran seven miles later in the day and could barely pick up my legs.  I wasn’t fully recovered from Saturday’s twenty miles.  I’m feeling good to have finally gotten in a big run.  The ice is melted well enough now north of Hwy 52.  The trail was still mostly ice south of 52.  I would tell you it slowed me down but I still averaged a nine minute pace – that’s good for me.  Of course, I’m hoping to run the Austin Marathon in an eight minute pace, but those will be more favorable race conditions.

snow in your faceCountdown is exactly four weeks.  I’m five pounds over where my race weight was in the Denver Marathon.  Winter comfort.  I tried abstaining from cheese and ice cream as a New Year’s resolution but gave up.  Totally unrealistic.  I’m also abstaining from alcohol and have maintained that resolution.  Beer and Dairy together was biting off more than I could chew.  I thought the dietary resolutions would help me with weight control knowing my mileage would drop over the winter.  The lower altitude might compensate for the extra pounds.

Robs ShortcutI wasn’t the only one out running on the ice this week.  I shared some “are you effin’ kidding me” looks with a few others on the LoBo trail.  The week before, I couldn’t get over the snow.  My runs were necessarily short given the exhausting conditions.  I donned snowshoes one day and ended up with a blister that I’m still feeling.  It was a poor week for running.  I commended myself for simply getting out at all and figured it couldn’t get any worse.  I was wrong.  It wasn’t safe to walk down to the coffee shop this week, let alone run.  We began with a foot of snow and below freezing temps.  Then, in half a day, the mercury rose by 50°.  Only in Colorado can that happen.  The flash-melted snow refroze as ice later that same night, so perfectly you could ice skate down the sidewalk.

Running was unthinkable and I lost a couple of days.  I know how unwise running was because I tried the day after the big snow-to-ice conversion.  Got in four miles.  Not sure how to describe my form.  I kept my stride as short as possible without actually standing still.  My effort was extremely taxing on my quads and groin.  There were countless out-of-control moments where I thought I was going to die.  It was not enjoyable and I spent the next two days indoors looking out the window like Sally and her little brother in the beginning to The Cat in the Hat.  Conditions were reasonably better Saturday and I skated for twelve death-defying miles, with a similar super short, groin-stressing stride.

Tennessee CabinThis is not ideal considering I’m training for a marathon.  I have five weeks to step up my distance.  With Ellie’s snowboarding lessons every Sunday, my only chance for the requisite twenty mile training runs is Saturday.  Fortunately I ran some twenty milers back in December.  I don’t need to run  massive miles every weekend, I’d settle for two such runs before February.  January has three more weekends in it.  This is why Colorado runners plan their marathons for the fall, after a long summer of optimal conditioning.  I’ve run two Austin Marathons in February and three Denver Marathons in the fall.  Despite the altitude difference, I’ve yet to run as fast in Austin as I do in Denver.  It’s difficult to train sufficiently for winter marathons.  I’m happy with my snowshoe training though.

I snowshoed the same Lonestar Loop today that I did last Sunday, but this time I found the spur to the Tennessee Mountain Cabin.  This added nearly a mile for a five mile, two hour effort.  Trekking counter-clockwise, the right hand turn to the cabin is at 2.3 miles, at the second intersection with the Rising Sun ski trail, a full mile after passing the high point sign.  That first 1.3 miles present a 700 foot climb.  The cabin housed some lodgers but they showed me inside.  Nine of them slept comfortably overnight, kept warm by a wood burning stove.

sittingThe girls had an awesome day with their snowboard lessons.  Zero wind today made the 20° feel warm.  This photo captures the only sun I ever saw today.  The clouds were black with snow, which fell heavy throughout the day.  This completes two of the girls’ six Sunday course.  Julianna, their instructor, praised their coordination and balance as they steadily progress up the mountain.  The girls are having fun while I get in some high-altitude hill training.  Maybe not your conventional marathon workout, but works for me.

Australian Shepherd, Eldora Nordic Center, snow board, snowshoe

Ellie n EmmaWinter recreation is exhausting.  Ellie and Emma began their six week snow boarding course today up at Eldora – in 20° and 30 mph winds.  They loved it nonetheless.  I snowshoed at the Eldora Nordic Center while they snow boarded.  Ellie is dead tired.  I take a perverse pleasure in being able to physically exhaust a kid.  But I’m much more beat.  The trails at the Eldora Nordic Center are hilly.

high pointI paid $20 for the Nordic pass.  Compare that to a lift ticket.  Although I’ll be doing this again for the next five Sundays.  Karen will likely go with me.  She remained behind today to teach an aerobics class.  Emma’s mom plans to snowshoe with us too on occasion.  I expect this Nordic Center to really work out well for us three as it contains a series of concentric loops at various distances.  Concentric might be a poor word choice.  The loops don’t have a common center, rather they all start from the Nordic Center Lodge.  We can start out together, but I can go for a longer distance.  I trekked the Lone Star Loop today for about four miles.  There’s a spur off to the Tennessee Mountain Cabin that would add some distance, but I missed the sign for it.

puppiesToday’s little winter fun marks the end of my Christmas Holiday.  Actually, I worked Friday.  Still, this weekend feels more official.  It’s been a big two weeks.  A trip to Texas.  And the other day, Ellie rescued two puppies.  After Jack’s passing, I told her she could get a puppy in May, so that she would have time to train it once school is out.  Not only did May become January, but Ellie elected to adopt two dogs.  I’m mixed on all this, but they are cute.  Meeko is on the left, weighing in at two months.  And Millie is on the right, she’s four months.
