It looked like winter today.  And it was fairly cool when I stepped out the door.  By the time I reached the trail though, the weather was ideal for running.  I’m not yet in a strong running routine and I did well to get out there, but I overdressed.  I suspect I was compensating for not wanting to get outside.  I wanted to remain warm and cozy.

I won’t sugarcoat it, running overweight sucks.  I have to walk up some of the bigger hills still on East Boulder Trail.  And I don’t like other runners passing me.  At the risk of me too backlash, I especially don’t like girls passing me like I’m standing still.  It’s not good for my self-image.

Honestly, the last couple of weeks, I’ve felt overweight in every aspect of my life.  Work has been hard.  Traveled last week and had to spend 14 hour days with 4000 of my closest friends.  I’m somewhere in the middle on the extrovert/introvert spectrum, but together time like that leaves me totally exhausted.

Then there are my book sales.  Or lack of.  I’ve been advertising and the click-through rates are awesome.  But that just means I’m spending money, because my conversion rate sucks.  I’ve discovered and fixed some mistakes but for the most part, my problem is a lack of reviews.  People don’t buy online without reviews and to date, I have zero reviews.  I should probably stop advertising until I get some.

Sorry to bring you down but I blog what’s on my mind.  Right now, my mind needs to lose some weight.

Cairn

There’s a heap of stones piled up on the East Boulder Trail that I haven’t noticed before.  Probably because I haven’t run this far on the trail yet this year. In trumpian fashion, I didn’t intend to run this far today.  Maybe I was into a song, but I ran past my turn-around target, which was a couple hundred meters above this hill.  Seeing this cairn direct my flight toward the newer southeastern path, woke me up.  I stayed the course and ran down the hill.

I knew that, in my current state of fitness, running down that hill might be a mistake.  Odds very much are that I’ll have to return back up that same hill.  By the photo above, not only is it clear that I made it another quarter mile, but the footbridge has finally been repaired after the last big flood.

I did make it back up that hill.  I’m not saying I didn’t walk a bit of it.  I will say that I took both the downhill and uphill pictures together, on my return.

I made it back to my car, feeling like I just experienced my best run of the year.  Not only did I best a recent-distance metric, but my confidence level was boosted by the accomplishment.  Accidental or not.

I pronounce cairn like my wife’s name, Karen, but with an Irish lilt that moves the second vowel ahead of the”r”.  Some pronounce it like the word farm.  It’s Scottish-Celtic for a heap of rocks with a meaning.  A monument, if not a landmark.  Cairns are one of the best forms of aesthetic function you’ll ever come across.

Indian Summer Run

Last weekend’s run in falling snow was nice.  The contrasting weather made today’s Indian summer run all that more special.  With these dream-like conditions, it’s almost as if God wants me to get outside for a run.

Over the past five weeks or so, I’ve lost ten pounds.  At 189, I’m running with confidence again.  Certainly not fast, but with strength over the white rock hills of the East Boulder Trail.  Those three days of running in southern Utah were the catalyst I hoped they would be.  Running is joyful again.

This is hands-down my favorite running season.  The air was crisp, the sun warm, and the Indian Peaks capped with fresh white snow.  The absence of those ten pounds were noticeable.  My legs felt strong running up the hills.

Afterward, we picked out pumpkins at Munson Farms.  Karen’s parents are in town.  Brit joined us with her fiancé, Eric.  And Ellie Rose brought her boyfriend, Will.  Along with pumpkins, I purchased some Munson yellow onions to stew a french onion soup for dinner  tomorrow.  The days might be warm still, but the evenings cool off, suggesting a fall menu.

September’s Coming

Today’s run on the East Boulder Trail began with 70° air and wet mist in my face.  The clouds were thick riding on wind from the mountains.  September’s coming.  I looked into her gray eyes as I climbed each hill, and felt the coolness of her breath on my skin.

With a mile and a half and the water tank hill remaining of my run, she increased her intensity, blowing wind at my chest and raining hard.  The dirt turned to muddy clod on my shoes.  I slipped a few times, but with my trail spirit Lobo running alongside me, I never fell.

A week ago, I was depressed, unable to run this trail without walking the hills.  I was ready to abandon running, but running won’t give me up.  With the cool, wet weather, I completed every hill today.  If you were out there too, then you know what I’m talking about.  September coming to Colorado is an almost mythical experience.  Like U2 at Red Rocks.  After reaching the top of the water tank hill, the sun lit up platinum-blue clouds over the Indian Peaks.  Mountains previously obscured by forest fire haze.  It was magical.

The rain stopped as I reached my car.  I brought along a dry shirt, so I used my drenched T as a blanket for my muddy shoes.  I don’t mind getting dirty with running though.  I pray for more of the same tomorrow.

I’m still running, if you can call it that.  I run the East Boulder Trail on Saturdays and Sundays.  Mountain trails are out of the question right now.  This trail is pedestrian enough for my current skills, while presenting me with hills that give my cardio a workout regardless of how slow I take them.  I have to tell you, it’s not fun.  As much as I love running, running fat is a painful exercise.  I’m doing it though to stay in the game.  I won’t always be fat.

I don’t expect to able to run my 3-day October event, the Grand Circle Trailfest.  A half marathon each day through Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon.  At any time over the last nine years, I could run a half marathon at the drop of a hat.  Now, my ability to run a 10K without some walking is questionable.  I’ll likely try to defer this to next year.  The splash of realism in my face came last week from my doctor.  He said he won’t let me run it without agreeing to take some tests first.  What a wet blanket.  How did I fall so far, so fast?  I know how.

Typical story.  Lose weight slowly.  I lost an average of five pounds per year over a series of years.  Then I maintained it steady for awhile at what I think is my sweet spot, 175 pounds.  Then, cancer dropped me down to 165 for a couple years, and like everyone else, I’ll admit that didn’t look so good.  It did help me to run fast though.

After the 2017 Colorado Marathon, I stopped running almost completely.  I went from running on average seventy miles a week, burning and replenishing 3000 calories per day, to running about ten miles per week.  Problem is, I kept consuming those 3000 daily calories.  A man my age should maybe eat 2000 calories per day.  I gained thirty-five pounds in six months.  Fuck.

I know enough about nutrition and exercise to understand I need to focus first on diet, then exercise.  I’m starting to focus on it.  Change for most things comes through routine.  I know how to do that.  Of course, knowing how and doing it are two different things.  At the same time, I’m beginning to work more on my second book, which is essentially a second hobby.  And writing is more fun than running fat, so I tend to put more effort into the writing.

But I don’t want to give up running.  It’s been a constant throughout my life, with memories all the way back to childhood.  Forgive the play on words from the popular running and nutrition book, but I’m going to run fat and eat slow until I return to form.  Until I can run six miles again without having to walk every little hill.  That 3 day run through gorgeous national parks is probably out of reach this year.  That’s fine.  I just want to drop a good ten pounds so I can enjoy running in the Colorado fall.

Dirt Trails

Two days in a row running the East Boulder Trail, up and down the white rock cliffs.  These trails are easy, soft dirt, compared to the rocky mountain trails out around Lyons and Left Hand Road.  These dirt trails are a better fit for my current state of fitness.  The true mountain trails are so technical and I’ve lost some of the requisite skills of negotiating my footfalls along the path.  And they are much, much steeper, causing me to walk more than run.  I can generate a little bit more momentum over these dirt trails.  I can take my eyes off my feet and enjoy the views of the Indian Peaks.  You can see them in this photo, just over the crest of the hill in front of me.

The East Boulder Trail contains rolling hills through grasslands where, centuries earlier, the buffalo roamed.  Now I roam these hills, and have for the last twenty-eight years.  The grasses are nearing waist-high in some places.  We’ve been getting some good rain so far this season.

I ran all the hills, on a six mile out-and-back, yesterday.  It might have been cooler yesterday, and I ran really well.  Today, not so well.  No doubt, my legs were tired from yesterday.  I swear to you, the same hills were steeper today.  The trick is being able to climb the first big hill on the return without stopping.  My experience is if I stop there, like I did today near the top, then I’ll walk the final hill that leads up to the water tower – which I did today too.

Regardless, this trail always gives me a workout.  And the downside of each hill on the East Boulder Trail is generally rewarded with a nice view like this.  Sometimes, running in the mountains, you can’t see the forest for the trees.  The East Boulder Trail though always gives you an awesome view.  I will never tire of my runs on this trail.

Pre-Season is Over

Ellie is finishing up pre-season running the East Boulder Trail.  These hills aren’t for the faint-of-heart.  And the shadeless heat isn’t for the uninitiated.  We ran three miles out here last weekend, both Saturday and Sunday.  This weekend, we kicked it up a notch to five miles.  Monday afternoon, I hand over what’s left of her legs to the NHS Cross Country Team to train for reals.

Ellie really impressed me today by running the entire way back without walking.  This course is tougher on the return.  The final hill, up to the water tower behind the Heatherwood neighborhood, is a quarter mile climb.  It’s truly brutal.  I bet her an Intajuice she couldn’t do it.  She proved me wrong.  She’s ready for next week.

She Could Be a Dancer

dancer shoesEllie told me she intends to run Cross Country her freshman year at NHS.  Okay then.  I recall Brit telling me something similar ten years ago.  Long story short, Brit started out the season.  She ran some races.  Then she dropped out to perform in the school play.  The rest is history.  But I recall getting a shot at training Brit in preparation for joining a competitive team.  These high schools around Boulder County invented cross country.  I feel obligated to prepare Ellie this summer to avoid having her embarrass the family name in Colorado running circles.  Because really, this is all about me.

Ironically, I wasn’t in shape myself when I started to take Brit out on runs.  But even in my fattest of days, I could beat Brittany.  She would try out-kicking me at the end of long runs to say she beat me, after I just pushed her to complete 8 miles.  I got her up to 13 miles out on East Boulder Trail.  That water tower hill used to kick her ass.

I plan to start Ellie out with three milers.  We’ll stick to that and work our way up to five or six miles on daily runs.  Hopefully longer on weekends.  I’ll introduce her to the trails NHS will likely run on around Niwot.  I’ll prepare her as best I can.  I might lose a little conditioning myself if I shorten my runs, but I can afford to reduce the miles.  Or I can continue running after she’s done.  We won’t start until next weekend though since Ellie is off all week at Church Camp in Idaho.

I know the chances for Ellie to become a distance runner are as slim as Brit’s two stints in high school cross country.  Ellie started dance this year and has really taken to it.  Her first actual sport that she shows interest in.  Karen is of course happy because Karen was a dancer in both high school and college.  Technically, Karen is a still a dancer, teaching regular aerobics classes.  I’m going to take what this summer gives me though and try to make Ellie a runner.  She doesn’t have a distance runner’s body, but then neither do I.  My bone structure is too big and my legs aren’t very long.  I have decent sized calves, but that doesn’t necessarily contribute to distance running.  Few of us have perfect runner’s bodies, it comes down to what you like to do.  Where your interests lie.  Ellie is going to either be a dancer, or become a runner.  Maybe she’ll do it all.

I finally went for a massage to treat my lower back pain.  It’s been a problem since February.  I expected it to heal but it’s getting worse.  My massage therapist is Shannon Dunlap.  She’s as knowledgeable as any PT.  She confirmed my back is messed up, all wound up like a twisted pine.  As a result, my left leg is shorter than my right.  It’s always been the other way around.  Not that either leg is a different length, but these anomolies are caused by misaligned hips.  Pretty odd that they could reverse in terms of which is longer.  She helped alleviate the pain immensely, but it’s temporary.  Ultimately, I need to see a chiropractor.  That’s next on my list.  Felt really good today on a 12 mile run over the LoBo Trail.  Friday’s massage no doubt contributed.  Not sure what I’ll do Sunday.

I prefer photos with my eyes open, but at least I’m smiling.  At the end of a six mile race no less.  This race was three weeks ago, and I really did enjoy running through the snowfall.  I’ve noticed over the last several weeks, as the days warm up, my best runs are on the cooler days with temps in the 40°s and 50°s, and I slow down considerably on the warmer days.  I’ve yet to acclimate to the heat.  There are two types of Bolder Boulder 10Ks.  Cold, wet ones, and hot ones where I end up sunburned.  Hoping for a colder morning Memorial Day weekend.  I’m not expecting my best performance this year, but I get excited for this race anyway.

Despite my hamstring injuries, I’m still in decent running shape this year.  I just haven’t been running fast.  I hoped to be better positioned for a fast race next weekend but things are what they are.  The reason I strive for fast runs in the Bolder Boulder is that it’s the same race, the same distance, and the same month, on the same course, every year.  So it’s a great yard stick to measure progress.  Weather is the biggest variable.  I expect to run about 20 or 30 seconds slower per mile than last year, but that’s still within a range that I’ll enjoy it as a race.

I even made the same starting wave as last year.  This will have me starting before 7am, so I can expect a cooler temperature being early morning.  Hoping to avoid running slower than three weeks ago in Fort Collins which I ran in 45:01.  The BB10K is a much tougher course, but then it also has more runners and fans, which will motivate me to run hard.  It’s funny that even though my expectations are diminished, I’m still so excited about this race.  It’s such a celebration of running, a 6 mile long street party.  Below are all my BB10K times:

You can see where I essentially stopped running for 20 years.  The two runs close to 2 hours were actually walks.  My goal is to get back down to that 41 minute run from when I was 28 years old.  It’s within reach.  This is my 7th BB10K in a row.  I see a pattern in these times, starting with my return to running in 2010, of two steps forward and one step back.  But that’s really just a speed statement.  Health-wise, I’ve been steadily improving.  I’ve lost 30 pounds over this time period.  I don’t mind saying that I look like a runner again.  I think I’ll always be happy running any 10K under 45 minutes.  That’s racing speed for me.  I like seeing progress each year too, but I’m patient.  Faster times will come.

I ran the hills of East Boulder Trail this morning.  I barely noticed them.  I remember a time when my legs burned running up some of those hills.  This is just more good feedback letting me know I’m in good aerobic shape.  The bridge is still out over Boulder Creek on this trail.  Anyone have an ETA of when they intend to rebuild it?

Keith pinged Steve and me last night to get together this morning for a hill run.  Keith is training for a mountain trail run and so he is working the trails in the foothills above Boulder into his training regimen.  We didn’t synch up because we all have different perspectives on time and what constitutes a morning run.  For me, 10am would be the earliest, after I’ve read the paper and drank a pot of coffee.  Good thing because Keith ran Betasso.  That climb is clearly beyond my current capabilities.  I have the cardio but my legs are much too weak.  I don’t want to risk re-injury of my hamstrings.  Lest you think I’m a wimp, the start to Betasso is an extremely steep mile rise.  The Empire State building is a quarter mile high, so you just think about starting your run by climbing four Empire State buildings.  At altitude.  The free fall back down on the return is another adventure my legs don’t need.

Instead, I ran the East Boulder Trail.  This trail is no picnic, but the hills are much more gentle than the start to Betasso Trail.  The bridge over Boulder Creek is still out so I only got in five miles.  Good run though, all the hills are contained in that stretch between Boulder Creek and the water tower.  Even though I ran slow, I could tell my cardio was strong on the hills.  Good to know.

I set goals for this year around increasing my speed at the 10K distance.  So far, my injuries have set my training regimen.  Every injury is a learning opportunity.  This time around, I determined I need more strength in my hamstrings.  I’ve been running more off muscle memory than muscle mass.  After my runs, I dedicated time to leg weights.  I have since turned that more into calisthenics.  They feel more natural than weights.  More recently, I am doing less calisthenics and instead am dedicating more post-run time to stretching.  Sure, this pattern will soon have me on the couch drinking beer after my runs.  I’m evolving.

I run the Colorado Marathon 10K next weekend.  This will be my first race in five months.  I initially planned it to be a warmup to the Bolder Boulder.  Possibly a time trial to qualify me for a fast starting wave.  Those plans have changed.  I’ll probably only push myself the final 3 miles of the 10K, after a good 3 mile warmup.  This will still be good to condition me for the Bolder Boulder, although I’ve given up on running any speedy times the first half of this year.

The photo of Ellie in her new dress signifies a big birthday weekend.  I’ll complete my 54th trip around the sun tomorrow and Ellie turns 14 Tuesday.  The story on the dress is she wanted to buy it a few weeks ago from a dress shop in the neighborhood.  She went to coffee this morning with her friend Lindsey and walked by the shop to look at the dress.  Ellie was utterly destroyed when she saw it was no longer for sale in the window.  She coveted that dress.  An hour later, our neighbors Wendy and Chase stopped by to present it to her as a birthday gift.  I expect the smile currently beaming on Ellie’s face to be there all day.

Bolder Boulder, East Boulder Trail, Shoes and Brews

bibEllie and I signed up for the 2015 Bolder Boulder today.  Ellie will run with Wendy, Chase and the boys.  I start in the 3rd wave!

I’m pretty happy about this.  I’ve steadily improved my starting waves since I began racing these events again back in 2011.  My best was wave B (the 4th wave) in 2013.  Last year I jogged with Ellie.  This is important to me because each subsequent wave adds further distance to the run, due to passing other runners.  I figure each wave adds 10 to 15 seconds to an overall time.  The closer to the front, the less impact.  I’m hoping to run a 6:50 or so mile pace, but that won’t help me to run 42 minutes unless I’m in one of the first waves.

The funny thing, for me, is that the race time that qualified me for this wave was from one of my 5Ks earlier this year down in Austin.  Maybe submitting a time run at sea level is cheating.  I don’t care.  All’s fair in road racing.  I have to give credit to Ken Hausman for helping me to run a 20 minute 5K by passing me after two miles.  That pushed me.  My Bolder Boulder goal this year is under 43 minutes.  I think I have a shot at it.  I ran 13 miles today on the East Boulder Trail and felt strong on the hills.  I might run a couple of more 800 meter time trials at Shoes & Brews to work on my speed.  BB race day is May 25th.

Gunbarrel Trailhead

I park at the Gunbarrel Trailhead near 1pm this afternoon for a 12 mile run.  Maybe not the smartest time of day, considering the mid 70° weather, but Ellie’s puppies have increased my weekend chores.  The Bolder Boulder is considered a tough course due to the hills.  Other than entering Folsom Stadium, and maybe that high point at four miles, I would describe the race as a route with many slopes.  But even slight slopes at altitude can be ball busters, especially at race pace.  I need to begin training on these hills

The East Boulder Trail contains nearly 700 feet of elevation gain, and again that much loss, over my 12 mile route.  There are few trails outside of the mountains where you can expect over 1000 feet of elevation change. I discovered this gem when I first moved to Boulder in 1989.  I’ve been running this trail for nearly 26 years.  Assuming today goes well, this is going to be my secret training weapon to condition myself for the 2015 Bolder Boulder.

The run begins with a half mile rise to the water tower.  The slope is smooth though and serves as a nice warmup.  The water tower marks the trail high point with a quarter mile flat top.  The trail then drops through a two mile roller coaster to Boulder Creek.  It can be tempting to gain speed.  Momentum propels me into each rise, in this direction.  But I know I’ll need my strength for the return.  I maintain discipline with a controlled pace.  I know that after reaching the bottom of the creek valley, I’ll have another nine miles to run.  And it should go without saying, I have to turn around and climb back up.

Shortly after the foot bridge that crosses Boulder Creek, I come across a washed out section of trail where a small lake empties into the creek.  This must be from the great 2013 flood.  Have I not run this trail since then?  I guide my feet across rocks that sit flat above the flowing water and reach the other side dry.  The trail is flat for the next mile before resuming up a shallow southern slope through Teller Farms.

I begin to feel the heat.  In Colorado, clouds count as shade.  There are none today.  There is a strong wind, which normally I hate.  Today, this warm wind is my friend.  It joins my hat and 16 ounces of Skratch to help me through this hellfire.  There are many more runners in the Teller Farms flatlands.  I pass a woman running the opposite direction, toward the hills.  She appears at least ten years older then me.  I’ll know by where I see her again if she actually runs the hills above the White Rocks cliffs.

I see her again on my return a half mile before I reach the washout, along the creek where I floated my dogs’ ashes almost twenty years prior.  Teddy and Tara loved these runs in the late ’80s and early ’90s.  That is, before I knew dogs were illegal on this section of the trail and received a fine.  Well, not fined exactly.  The Ranger only had one ticket left and he messed it up.  But he gave me and the dogs a stern warning.  That woman must have run to the water tower before turning around.  What a bad ass.  She’s easily in her sixties.  I wonder how many years she’s been running these hills.

I think of Brittany as I launch up the first flight of hills.  It’s arguably tougher than the water tower hill.  If I can continue running up this hill, it’s possible I’ll complete all the hills without walking.  When this hill defeats me and I begin walking, I typically walk all the other hills too.  I introduced Brittany to this trail when she ran high school cross country.  I recall her yelling at me once on this hill to slow down.  I think she actually cried, but she made it without walking and ran up all the other hills too.  I thought she might lie down and die after the final hill near the water tower, she was breathing so hard.  But Brittany knows what all other runners out here know.  Lie down and the White Rock Hills will steal your soul.

I make this hill and all the others.  That final slog is long and turns steeper as it rises to the top.  The wind hits me in the face so hard as I crest that I don’t notice immediately I’m no longer running up hill.  About this time, some shirtless twenty year old brushes past me from behind and quips, “This breeze feels good, doesn’t it?”  He’s running too fast for me to respond.  Kids can be so cruel.  I scan the stunning vista in front of me.  I can see the entire Front Range.  Directly ahead are the snow capped Indian Peaks.  Longs Peak and Mount Meeker to my right.  The Flatirons over Boulder to my left.  This is the other reason I run here – the motivational views.

I almost always run alone out here.  Pace doesn’t matter on a course like this.  The slopes provide the workout.  Not just cardio, the steepness forces me to pick up my feet.  These hills are my running partner.  After 26 years of running the White Rocks Hills on the East Boulder Trail, I’m out here again looking for them to guide me back to the speed I ran at that age.  My runs with the dogs, and later with Brittany, make up only a fraction of my great experiences out here.  I hope these hills remember me.

Trail Closed

trail closedWhen half the streets in town are blocked by the National Guard in Humvees, it should come as no surprise all the trails in the county are also closed.  Still, I expected the East Boulder Trail to be open given its high ground.  But then it does lead down to the raging Boulder Creek after three miles.  So I decided to run Prospect Road leading east from my house to County Line Road.  This made for a 6 mile run.  And the hard-packed dirt surface emulates the Boulder Back Roads I’ll be running on in next Sunday’s marathon.  I ran into Keith who was returning from the same course.  Later, Steve pinged us to text that he also ran this course, taking it a bit further on Pipit to the flood waters.

After well-deserved naps, our relay team met up last night on Keith’s front porch to eat and drink our relay supplies.  Somehow this led to tequila shots which I’m fairly certain were not part of our relay provisions.  I’ve come to terms with my disappointment in the relay cancellation.  In light of the suffering of some of our neighbors from the unprecedented flooding, everyone seems to have come to terms with the letdown.  For the less empathetic of us, there was tequila.

We are less sympathetic to the plight of Paul, the Roads Less Traveled race director.  He refuses to refund even partial registration fees.  We paid $1100 as a team for registration, plus another $300 for volunteers.  I should say paid volunteers, but the race director doesn’t use that oxymoron as a descriptive in his emails.  I understand Paul would have some expenses to line up porta-potties, etc.  But I know these vounteers didn’t work Friday.  Their inability to get past the rock slide is why the race was cancelled.  Never mind they could have driven a back route along Hwy 285 and Guanella Pass.  These mercenaries weren’t as committed as us runners.  I won’t dwell on this.  It’s not constructive.  I do think Paul could at least promote a discount for next year’s event.  What are your thoughts on race directors who don’t provide even partial refunds?  Or on “paid” volunteers?

Imaginary Trail Race

The day after climbing Mount Audubon, I ran my usual 8 miles on the East Boulder Trail.  I start with the half mile hill climb to the water tower and turn around just past Valmont Road.  I cross the road and run to the first gate which is where I figure the 4 mile point is.  A few feet beyond the Teller Farm – North parking lot.  I then turn around for another mile of flat running before climbing back up the rolling hills that lead back to the water tower.

On Sunday’s return I passed up a young woman runner who was waiting for traffic at the Valmont Road cross walk.  I didn’t wait.  I darted across forcing the traffic to friggin stop.  It’s a cross walk.  It appeared this girl had just started her run from the parking lot.  A mile later I hit the first hill.  It’s brutally long.  It starts steep for about 200 yards and then stretches out with a continuous ascent for another quarter mile.  It turns 90° right (east) at the summit and holds essentially flat for nearly a quarter mile, before turning north again through yet more hills.

About three quarters through this flat section the girl (I can say girl because she’s at least half my age) passes by me.  It’s not unusual for other runners to pass me regardless of sex although they are typically younger.  This was odd in that I had passed her a mile and a half earlier as she was apparently warming up.  That might have been what woke me up from my recovery pace.  Whatever, the point is what I did next.  I determined I wasn’t as tired as my speed indicated.  I picked up my pace and passed her back within the next 200 yards.

I didn’t pass her so fast that she couldn’t have fended me off.  But I did begin to unwind and put some distance between us.  Turning to look over my shoulder at a bend a half mile later I noted that I had the same 50 yards on her that she had on me initially.  This means she let me gain a little ground but then picked up her pace to match mine.  With a mile and a half to go, and a monster hill, the question was would she try to retake me.  We had ourselves a little trail race.  How fun is that?

I was feeling and running strong.  I couldn’t stop her from catching me but I wasn’t going to let her pass.  I was confident I could hold her off.  That is until we reached the big final hill.  All bets were off then.  I couldn’t race that hill.  Most days I’m lucky to make it up without walking.  So I resigned myself to let her pass me on the hill if she was set on making her move then.  I know my limits.

Turns out she turned back around before the bottom of the hill.  She was evidently running 6 miles and avoiding the monster hill.  Just as well.  I was still racing her in my mind as I climbed it because I didn’t turn around to look for her until I reached the top.  She might not have ever been trying to catch me period but I was having a blast imagining she was.  Racing is a kick.

With the Austin and Moab half marathons behind me, and spring having launched this past week, I’m officially in spring training.  Daylight savings time has allowed me to move my runs to after work which gives me time to run farther.  And so I’ve begun to run a route that’s 6.8 miles.  But this weekend I really kicked it into gear, running 10.4 miles Saturday and 13 miles Sunday.  I ran pretty slow on both days – in the range of ten minute miles.  But these trail runs are seriously hilly.

The East Boulder Trail I ran on Saturday begins and ends with a 3 mile section of massive hills.  And Sunday’s run at Heil Valley Ranch goes up until I turn around.  I didn’t time myself because I expected to be crawling and I was.  Of course it’s downhill all the way back but my legs were too wasted to take it fast.  This is an extremely rocky trail, one that I’ve fallen hard on in the past, so I maintained control and focused on my foot work.  The uphill slog is all about thighs and foot work while the downhill return is all about knees and foot work.  The foot work is because of the rocks and is fine because I need to rediscover my trail legs since I intend to run several trail events this summer.  And my knees held out ok on the way down since I went slow enough.

A biker called out to me on the incline that he was impressed I still had the knees for this punishing trail.  The backwards compliment didn’t occur to me then and I shouted back that my knees are fine going uphill.  Later I realized he was also suggesting I’m an older runner.

This trail was actually crowded with bikers – it was a perfect spring morning with a cloud cover that never fully dissipated and a strong enough breeze of crisp cool air to keep me from over-heating without water for 2 hours.  Each time I passed some bikers either they would stop or I would pull over to let them pass.  There is official etiquette on who should yield to whom, but I make the call each time based on situational merits.  If they look like they will stop or if they need to stop, I’ll keep running.  If they look like they need to keep their momentum more than me or if they simply look strong, I’ll yield.  Sometimes there is room for both of us to squeeze by without stopping, but it is single track.

There’s typically a polite exchange.  If they pull over I say something like, “Thanks buddy”.  I received quite a number of “nice run” and “looking strong” comments.  Bikers always think runners have it tougher on hills.  But the very last biker to speak to me in the final mile said this as I pulled over for him.  “Thanks sir.  Have a good run.”  I shared little dialogs like this with over 20 bikers easily.  Some were even awkward as we would both stop not knowing who should yield.  Despite my exhaustion at this point, this guy irritated me.  Who the hell is he calling sir?  That’s fine when the bag boy says sir to me at the grocery store, but out here on the trail, when I’ve just completed 12 miles at altitude, don’t call me sir!  I’m on par with everyone out there, regardless of their age.  I passed my share of bikers, and other runners, both going uphill and back down.  I’m not a “sir” running like that, I’m a total bad-ass.  That skinny little runt probably didn’t even bike to the top.

La Sportiva

New trail shoes.  My old ones died on the Colorado Trail.  I liked them so much though I bought the same pair again.  It was tempting to buy something different.  Something with some color.  But these La Sportivas have such good stability.  And the Gore-Tex really works to keep my feet dry – very important.  And for trail shoes, I don’t feel they are overly heavy.  I broke them in Saturday with a 13 mile run on the East Boulder/White Rock Trail.  I’m considering hanging the old ones on my office wall after I complete the CT in October.  A self-awarded trophy of sorts.  That’ll dress up the home office.

Garmin Run

  I received the Garmin 310xt for my birthday Sunday and have logged 4 runs with it since.  This is somewhat extraordinary considering I haven’t worn a watch in two decades.  Fashion or sport.  I run based on how I feel using approximate time as a rough estimate of distance.  Not exact time since I’m not wearing a watch, but about a 30 minute run, an hour or so run – that sort of thing.  And that’s been good enough to satisfy me.  Running has been more of a hobby to me over the years than a fitness regimen.  The health benefits were consequential.  But that’s all changed now.

Not just because I have the Garmin.  Before receiving this gadget boy dream toy, I started to actually train.  I dieted for the first time in my life last year.  Registering for last September’s IPR put the fear of God into me and I got serious.  I knew that run would hurt, and I trained to minimize the pending pain.  And somewhere along the way I crossed the line back into the world of measurements.  And that’s ok, I’m in the mood for it.  Toys like this make it fun.

The coolest thing for me is that I tend to run trails or courses where I don’t have a good sense of the distance.  This changes that.  I’ve been running the East Boulder Trail for well over 20 years.  I have a 6 mile run, an 8 mile run, a 10 mile run, and a longer run that I’m not really sure of – 12 or 13 is my guess.  It’s an out and back run with the 12 or 13 mile route completing it trail head to trail head and back.  My first day running with the Garmin lead to somewhat of a disappointment as I discovered my neighborhood 4 mile run is only 3.5 miles.  And on Friday I learned my nearby 8 mile run is just 7.  I would have been super disappointed had my Garmin short changed my East Boulder Trail runs in similar fashion given my history with this course.  But it did not disappoint.

I always felt like the initial hill starting from the trail head up to the water tower was about a half mile.  Well it is – exactly.  I didn’t know that the flat top of the hill is a quarter mile – good to know.  It’s a nice recovery before heading down the far side.  I also know now that it’s a full mile to the bottom of the hill.  This side of the hill is such a bear on the return – and now I know it’s a quarter mile bear.  I also know the elevation of both sides – the Garmin doesn’t stop with just distance.  The run begins at 5308 feet, peaks at 5420 – the highest point for the entire trail – and drops down to 5289 at the 1 mile point.  This explains why running it on the return is so hard even though it’s half the distance, it’s both a larger elevation climb and steeper.  The elevation chart above appears symmetrical because it’s an out and back course.

The second mile occurs at the bottom of the sling-shot gorge.  If you run this trail you should know what I’m talking about even though I just made up that name.  I always run to the foot bridge over Boulder Creek for my 3 mile turn-around.  The Garmin suggests this is about 100 yards short of 3 miles, but that’s close enough to not upset me.  The run is still closer to 6 than 5.5 miles.  My 4 mile turn-around was about as close.  I know now that I need to cross Valmont and continue to the parking lot before turning to make an 8 miler.

Today I was going for my 10 miler, and to my surprise, I’d been running a good 100 yards farther for the turn-around than what the Garmin calls 5 miles.  Nice.  I’m of course extremely curious to map out the entire course, and I’ll do that soon enough.  I’ve always been somewhat irritated that this trail doesn’t have mile markers.  It’s a hugely popular running and biking trail.  But now I don’t need that.  I have my Garmin.

I’m out of control.  With another 5 days before I run the Moab Half Marathon, I just registered for the Boulder Half Marathon for the following weekend.  Why not?  Spring training is in full swing.  I’d probably do my 12 mile run on East Boulder Trail anyway; might as well get a finisher’s medal for my efforts.  Plus I hear they hand out finisher’s shot glasses.  That will be a nice compliment to my 100 plus shot glass collection.

And here’s the kicker.  When I’m standing in the Moab starting corral with my friends, and Keith asks me what pace I plan to run, I’ll respond, “Around eight and a half minutes Keith.  I don’t want to push too hard cuz this is just a warm-up for next week’s Boulder Half.”  What an ass!

Leg of Lamb

I know, not my typical running pic.  But when I say I really enjoy the outdoors, that includes grilling.  And I’ve got a 5 pound bone-in leg of lamb on the rotisserie right now.  I ran 12 miles earlier today on the East Boulder Trail.  Why wouldn’t I enjoy some of Colorado’s famous mutton after such an extreme calorie burning endeavor.  I love lamb.  I love red meat.  I haven’t been eating as much of it since Karen started cooking most of our meals again.  I don’t believe runners need a high-carb diet.  I’ve always been pretty good at listening to my body; and after massive runs like today – my aching knees, muscles and joints are screaming for some fatty meat.

With that said, I am going to try to diet somewhat going into February.  The Austin Marathon is in 21 days and I’m a bit heavier than I was last fall when I ran the Denver Marathon.  I’m not looking to set any records.  I scheduled this to motivate myself to run through the winter and I’ve done that.  I just want to feel comfortable.  Losing five pounds would likely help.  I haven’t been consistent at lifting weights but I’ll try harder because I believe weights help too.  I believe a little strength training helps to avoid injury.  I’ve been reading some running blogs on the Austin course and apparently it’s considered hilly.  That’s the Austin I remember.  I’m not running hills during the week but I do on the weekends so I’ll be fine.  The course begins with a 300 foot climb in the first two miles.  I like that because it almost forces you to start out slow as you should.  The course then drops back down over the next 4 miles.  This is followed by a 12 mile climb back up those 300 feet but after mile 18 it’s all downhill to the finish on Congress Avenue.  Nice.

My flight gets in too late Saturday night to pick up my bib and race packet, but my brother Steve said he’d do it on the way to the airport to pick me up.  I’ll be staying at my mom’s house in Round Rock.  Steve will no doubt try to talk me into hanging out at the Cool River but I’m smart enough not to do that.  Hopefully he won’t stay out too late because he’s my ride to the race the next morning.  If I didn’t have family in Austin I’d have stayed downtown, probably at the Driskill Hotel – that would be convenient.  I’ll remain in Round Rock at my mom’s house for a couple days after the race, my return flight is Tuesday night.  I can work from her house – she’s got wifi and high-speed Internet.  I learned from the Denver Marathon that I should do some walking the first couple of days after the event to work out the lactic acid and loosen up.  It’ll be interesting to see how well I recover.  That will demonstrate both my level of fitness as well as my post race experience.

Running Fast

I had some nice runs this weekend.  Week one after the IPR, I only ran my 4.5 mile loop each day to recover.  Did some 8 mile runs over the weekend and I expected to increase my mileage this week, but work was too busy and I only squeezed one 8 miler in during the work week.  Yesterday, Saturday, was sort of busy too and I didn’t make it out to a trail, but ran 8 miles in town.  It was probably good for my knees to keep off hills.  I ran in the late morning but despite the clear sky it wasn’t overly hot.  The air felt cool blowing against my sweat-soaked skin.  The amazing thing about this run was that after all the months of consistently running everyday.  Methodically increasing my distance.  Adding hills and trails at an increasing rate each week.  I finally felt some speed.  Don’t get me wrong. Losing 15 pounds this year was nice.  Having muscle tone return to my thighs and hamstrings was very satisfying.  I’ve even come close to my goal of a flat stomach.  I’ve started to accept that may never happen, but it won’t matter much if I can run fast.

After 3 miles into Saturday’s run, Ashlee Simpson began singing La La from my playlist, and my legs fell into a stride of their own design.  It was noticeable.  It was that feeling where your body’s forward motion is the norm and to slow down would take more energy than to simply let it go.  I haven’t felt this in two decades.  It’s extremely promising.  They say muscles have memory, well mine remember running fast.  If you’re a runner or athlete, and you ever reached peak competitive conditioning, then you know the thrill of letting go of conscious control while your body performs balls out.  It’s nearly an out of body experience.  Damn, I like it.

Today’s run felt nice too.  I hit the East Boulder Trail around noon and completed 10 miles.  It’s a challenging trail with serious hills the first 3 miles, and of course the last three miles as you return.  Even when I feel strong on the way out, I’m typically debating walking on the return.  I didn’t over stride today but I felt strong the entire course.  Very happy with myself.  Targeting the Denver Marathon in a few weeks.
